Bastiaan Woudt
The Netherlands, 1987
The photographic journey of Bastiaan Woudt started the way it does for most photographers: by
capturing his loved ones. His passion for the medium made him expand his horizon.
And by immersing himself into the world of photobooks and exhibitions, he developed from his early
Pictorialist style into something wholly more abstract yet sharp, and with a strong focus for detail.
His portraits and nudes transform the subject from mere humans into something unreal. Woudt
experiments heavily with new methods and cameras to keep on evolving as a photographer and to move
towards a complete and unique signature style.
In 2014 he was chosen as New Dutch Photography Talent, and in the same year, he joined the
Kahmann Gallery. He was named one of the biggest talents working today by the prestigious
magazine The British Journal of Photography in 2016, furthering his position as a talent on the rise.
In 2017 he won the Van Vlissingen Art Foundation Award.

Bastiaan Woudt sets new auction record
at Phillips London
End of October 2019, the photograph “Thula” (2017) by Dutch artist Bastiaan Woudt (b. 1987) was
auctioned for the exceptional amount of £ 35.000 (over € 40.000).
The “artist proof” of this sold-out work far exceeded its
estimate of £18.000 - £22.000.
Never before has such a young Dutch photographer (age 32) sold a work for such a high amount.
In recent years, this number has not even been reached by any Dutch photograph.
With this sale, Woudt joins the ranks of the most expensive photographers from the Netherlands,
such as Rineke Dijkstra, Desiree Dolron, Ruud van Empel or Erwin Olaf.
The work was auctioned at the latest edition of ULTIMATE, an auction held by Phillips in London.
Eight exclusive photographs – the “ultimate” works by these artists – were carefully selected by
the auction house. The auction also included unique and sold-out works by masters such as Wolfgang
Tillmans and Peter Beard, alongside a small number of photographs never auctioned before, such as
the one by Woudt.
